Catina S. : Celebrating 50 and a healthy future | 50 Over 50 Portrait Series (Vol. 5)
Welcome to Catina’s story as part of the 50 Over 50 Portrait Series! I am photographing 50 women over the age of 50, sharing their stories, providing them with gorgeous, heirloom portrait art for their legacy, and celebrating them with an in-person gala exhibition at the conclusion of the project. For all the details, visit www.amandafaucettportraits.com/50.
Catina contacted me about creating photos for her 50th birthday - which turned out to ALSO BE MY 50th birthday! We knew it was meant to be!
I enjoyed hosting Catina in the studio and getting to know her. I can’t wait for you to hear more of her story. (All photos by Amanda Faucett Photography.)
What are some of the most significant lessons you've learned since turning 50?
One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned since turning 50 is the importance of taking care of my health—both physically and mentally. I’ve realized that health isn’t something I can take for granted, so I make it a priority to eat better, stay active, and get enough rest. Another big lesson has been learning not to stress over things I can’t control. Stress only takes away energy and joy, so I try to focus on what truly matters and let go of the rest. I’ve also learned to appreciate the present moment more, spend time with people who uplift me, and invest in things that bring peace and happiness.
How has your perspective on life changed as you've gotten older?
As I’ve gotten older, my perspective on life has shifted in meaningful ways. I’ve learned to value health and peace of mind more than material things. I try to focus on balance—taking care of my body, protecting my mental health, and not stressing about situations beyond my control. I’ve also grown to appreciate the small, everyday moments that bring joy, instead of always chasing big milestones. With age comes a clearer sense of what truly matters: relationships, self-care, gratitude, and living in a way that feels fulfilling rather than rushed.
What is one thing you wish more people understood about women over 50?
One thing I wish more people understood about women over 50 is that this stage of life is not about slowing down or fading into the background—it’s about strength, wisdom, and resilience. Women over 50 are still growing, learning, and contributing in meaningful ways. We carry valuable life experience, but we also continue to set new goals, explore new opportunities, and prioritize our health and happiness. It’s important to see women over 50 not just through the lens of age, but as individuals with energy, creativity, and plenty of life ahead.
What accomplishments are you most proud of at this stage in your life?
At this stage in my life, one of the accomplishments I’m most proud of is raising my daughter, who is now 22 and in college at LSU. Watching her grow into a strong, independent young woman reminds me that the love, values, and guidance I poured into her truly made a difference.
What are your hopes or dreams for the years ahead?
Looking ahead, my biggest hopes are to travel more and spend quality time with my family. I want to experience new places, create lasting memories, and enjoy adventures both big and small. At the same time, I dream of living each day with balance and joy. My hope is to continue growing, learning, and cherishing the moments that truly matter with the people I love most.
Tell me about a challenge you've faced in your middle or older years and how you overcame it (or how you are in the process of overcoming it, or accepting it).
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my later years has been being diagnosed with congestive heart failure. At first, it was overwhelming to accept, and it forced me to look at life differently. I’ve learned that I can’t take my health for granted, and I’ve had to make changes—eating better, following medical advice, and listening to my body.
How do you nurture your physical, emotional, and/or spiritual well-being?
I nurture my well-being by taking care of my health first. Physically, I focus on eating better, moving my body, and listening to my doctor’s guidance. Emotionally, I try not to let stress take over—I remind myself to slow down, breathe, and enjoy the little moments. Spiritually, I lean on faith, gratitude, and time with family to keep me grounded. Each of these areas works together, helping me stay strong, balanced, and at peace in this stage of life.
What brings you the most joy these days?
What brings me the most joy these days is my daughter. Watching her grow into the young woman she is, seeing her thrive in college, and knowing she is building her future fills me with pride and happiness. Spending time with her—whether it’s a simple conversation, sharing a meal, or cheering her on from afar—reminds me of the love, connection, and purpose that matter most in my life.
