Kimberly Lalou on choosing positivity and finding peace through the "Let Them" mindset | Wise Women: 50 Over 50 Portrait Experience (Vol. 12)
“I am proud of my attitude. I know that people want me to be in the room because I bring positivity. I choose how my day will go. And I make this choice every day.” - Kimberly L.
Allow me to introduce Kimberly Lalou, a fierce, unstoppable woman over 50 who absolutely lit up my studio with her megawatt grin and contagiously upbeat personality during her 50 Over 50 portrait session. Kimberly’s zest for life was evident throughout our time together. As you’ll see in her images, she also has a delightfully quirky side that is unabashedly her own - one of the many gifts of this season of life.
A unique tidbit about Kimberly’s session: it was GIFTED to her by one of her employees (and friends), Jenna (see Jenna’s 50 Over 50 story here). Jenna had her own 50 Over 50 shoot with me and loved it so much she wanted to share it with Kim, who she knew would love the entire experience. (Spoiler alert: she really did!)

What are some of the most significant lessons you've learned since turning 50?
You cannot control others- only yourself. Choose happiness, guard your inner peace, and protect your mind. It is not selfish, it is survival. Be unapologetically yourself. When I was younger I was told that growing old is a gift denied to many. As I have aged and lost family and friends, I have gained an appreciation for that concept.
How has your perspective on life changed as you've gotten older?
Following the "Let Them" mindset has brought me peace. I can be part of people's lives without trying to control their actions or outcomes. Even if I think they are making a mistake, it is theirs to make, and theirs to learn from. Instead, I step back and simply be there. This allows me to truly be present. I listen to people when they talk, and look them in the eyes. I enjoy the moment.
What is one thing you wish more people understood about women over 50?
Women over 50 are unstoppable and fierce. We have faced battles, overcome loss, and survived heartbreak. Many of us have chose not to speak about our challenges. But our past has made us the women we are today. And still we rise, ready to conquer what the future holds.
What accomplishments are you most proud of at this stage in your life?
My 3 children will always be my best accomplishment. They are all grown and thriving. They inspire me daily. Watching them become parents has given me so much joy. I am also proud of my attitude. I know that people want me to be in the room because I bring positivity. I choose how my day will go. And I make this choice every day.
What are your hopes or dreams for the years ahead?
Maintain my positive attitude. Choose how I spend my time and focus on people and activities that make me happy.
How do you nurture your physical, emotional, and/or spiritual well-being?
Spending time with Cody is my absolute favorite. He allows me to be myself and encourages me to take risks. We enjoy days in the pool or listening to music. The greatest gift in love is having your partner as your best friend.
How do you define beauty now, compared to when you were younger?
I was scared of aging. Now I embrace it and allow myself to take more risks than I ever did when I was young.
What role do friendships and community play in your life now?
True friends are priceless. You may only have a couple, but that is all you need. Keep them close and nurture them.
What brings you the most joy these days?
A day in the pool, cooking burgers on the small Weber grill which burns charcoal, a new favorite band to obsess over. My favorite part of work is watching my agents thrive. I love empowering them to take their careers to the next level. Vacationing with family and friends. Disney with my kids and grandkids. A day at the beach (or a week).
Any words of advice or inspiration for younger women?
Ladies, be patient with yourselves-Life is a journey, not a destination. Trust your instincts, and remember , mistakes are just part of growth. Take risks. And whatever you do, wear that outfit you are second-guessing... because you look amazing, I promise. Also, your job is not who you are. Do not let it ruin your life. And do not cancel date night. That is what matters most.
What is an experience that has significantly impacted the direction of your life? How old were you when this happened, and what was the effect on your life?
I met my biological Father for the first time at 40 years old. Up until that mement I had been an only chilld. I also gained 3 sisters and a brother. I am not the best sibling. I do not understand quite how to do it. But I am so grateful that they are part of my life.
What is something you once feared about aging that you now embrace?
I feared how I would look. I did not want to be old. But now I realize that being older is nothing like I feared. In fact, it is freeing.
What stereotype about women over 50 would you like to challenge or change?
That we must look, act or dress a certain way. Or that we can no longer enjoy an activity that is considered young.
